Yahoo! to use Singapore for expansion in Southeast Asia
18 August 10
Internet giant Yahoo! is expanding its presence in Southeast Asia by using Singapore as its Southeast Asian headquarters.
Apart from Singapore, the internet services provider also has a presence in Malaysia and Vietnam. It is opening new offices in Jakarta and Manila in the fourth quarter of 2010 and planning to target Thailand next.
The expansion is an indication of its confidence in the region. It will also increase its head count for its Singapore office from the current 260 to 350 by the end of this year.
According to Yvonne Chang, managing director for Southeast Asia, Yahoo, the company will spend money in places that need investments. And definitely, Southeast Asia is the region.
Moving on, Yahoo is hoping to enter big in the mobile handset space, given that mobile Internet is growing much faster here than PC Internet in this region.
Yahoo will strengthen its online content production team to customise to the different target audience in the region.
